Junior + Kids have the opportunity to win prizes in their category plus compete in the Main Top Weight Prizes and Grand Mystery! (lucky to be a kid!)

THE DETAILS :

This competition is only landbased fishing from the beach with a Rod and Reel or a handline (max 3 hooks), no drones, kites, cannons, boats or anything to get the line out further than you can throw it. Great family day at the beach with prizes for all ages!

Saturday 26th April 2025 (Anzac Long Weekend)

Time:

6am – 3pm

Where:

Fishing is off the beach from Marsden Point to Waipu Cove. Approx 20km of ataahua (beautiful) beach!

Free Tickets:

Tickets will be available at venue’s around Bream Bay from Monday 21st April, the week and on the day of the competition! VENUES UPDATED HERE SOON AND ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE OR GROUP OR ON MOST LOCAL FACEBOOK GROUPS

Due to high numbers of people expected this year, we have increased the beach area this year from last years Marsden Point to Ruakaka Rivermouth to go all the way to Waipu Cove. This is approx 20km of beach to enjoy and try catch the winning fish!

We are hoping to see the beach packed with rods and reels and lots of fun, fish and familys enjoying the day!

You can pickup tickets for other people but strictly 1 per person is allowed. Anyone found to have more than 1 ticket in their name will be disqualified from the prizegiving

*ID maybe required to confirm name on ticket at Prizegiving if proof of ticket owner is questioned

Weigh-in:

Weigh Station opens at 12pm and 3pm is last weigh-in time at (To Be Confirmed). NO EXCEPTIONS.

You can be IN THE LINE waiting for weigh-in.

All fish must be of legal size to be weighed

Once we have recorded the top weighed fish in each category we may decide not to weigh and record your fish if it is clearly under these weights. This is to speed up the process. Please do not be offended.

Facebook will be updated hourly during competition with the winning weights so you can view and aim to beat

OR throw unwanted undersized fish back to tangaroa = the sea

We are not auctioning fish so please take your fish home. We will have an option to help donate the fish to the local community

Prizegiving:

4pm

Where: To Be Confirmed but its likely to be on or near the weighstation and an outside prizegiving due to numbers expected.

Our Main Cash Prizes are all based on weight.

If multiple people have the same exact weight the prize will be shared if possible (cash or splitable product) or coin flip to decide, if unable to share.

If main prizes an’t claimed due to lack of fish they will be drawn as a mystery prize

Lots of Mystery Prizes!!!!! (you only have to have a ticket to be into win at prizegiving. No fish needed to be caught!)

No Ticket No Prize

All prizes require you to be at prizegiving and show your ticket to receive the prize. Prizes can only be claimed by the person who’s name is linked to the ticket

In the event one of the main weight prizes are not claimed at prizegiving the person with the next best weighted fish will win the prize, as all prizes require the ticket holder to be present at prizegiving

The organizers take no responsibility for lateness or anyone that does not claim their prize before the prize is redrawn

For unclaimed Mystery Prizes we will just redraw until we find a winner

All winning tickets that have won a mystery prize will be removed until all remaining mystery prizes have been won. All tickets will be put back in for the chance to win the Main Mystery Prize of $500+ TBC

Other Rules

Rod reel, handlines only! and landbased fishing from the beach from Marsden point to Waipu Cove. NO EXCEPTIONS! OFF THE ROCKS IS NOT BEACH!

Competitors participate in the tournament at their own risk. Mai Place Bream Bay or anyone involved in helping run the competition does not accept any liability whatsoever for material damage or personal injury sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during, or after the tournament

All rules and/or clarifications as well as additional instructions shown here on this website are deemed to be known and accepted by all participants who enter the competition. Anyone found to be breaking any of these rules will be excluded from all prizegiving

Only our scales may be used to weigh the fish. This will be done at the weigh station at (to be confirmed)

Disputes: The Tournament Administrator’s decision shall be final and binding

No fish auction. Either keep fish or we will help you donate to the local community. Note: It is illegal to buy, sell or swap recreationally caught seafood

There are places on the beach you can take your vehicles and places you can’t. We take no responsibility for anyone deciding not to following any of the laws stated here

For the competition, the only restriction is that you MUST of caught the fish on the day/time of the competition off the “BEACH” from Marsden Point all the way to Waipu Cove, how you got there, in a vehicle or not is of no regard to us, and is your responsibility.

Alittle about this Competition – Past and Future!

This annual competition is all about bringing the community together through traditional beach fishing. Our goal is to create an annual event that everyone can enjoy, no costly gear needed!

This is more than just a fishing competition, it’s something the community can call their own, an event to look forward to each year and an opportunity for local businesses and individuals to give back, get involved and help build a stronger, more connected community.

Now in its second year, this event was first dreamed up last year on a Sunday morning in bed and just three weeks later, 300 people hit the beach with their free tickets!

About Mai Place

A Free Community Website for Local Businesses & Events.

Mai Place helps local businesses gain free exposure, offering features that other platforms charge for. Soon, we’ll introduce local storefronts, local news and more. Businesses can also opt for “Cha-Ching Marketing” services to boost their reach.

Starting in Bream Bay, MaiPlace aims to expand to all suburbs in NZ.

All seaside communities, like Mangawhai and Waihi, will be encouraged to host their own free community fishing competitions.

As the founder of Mai Place, I’m driven by a passion for giving back to the community and creating opportunities that bring people together. The Bream Bay Fishing Competition is just one of the many ways I aim to build a stronger, more connected community, something locals can call their own and look forward to each year.

Over the years, I’ve organized several community-driven initiatives, including

Lemon & Grapefruit Pickup – Collected fruit to donate to food banks, helping make jams for those in need.
Cash Hunt Henderson – A fun treasure hunt where I hid sponsor-donated cash for locals to find.
Sports Coaching – Dedicated time as a soccer and softball coach, helping young athletes grow.
Facebook Group Fundraisers – Sold two Facebook groups, one to cover the funeral costs of an admin/moderator who passed away and another where I donated half the proceeds to help an admin’s daughter attend college.
Bloom’n Things – Created a community business to support local artists by giving them a platform to sell their crafts.
Mai Technokiwi Competition – A contest for primary school kids to win prizes and spark their interest in technology.

The Mai Place vision is simple, support local businesses, create free events and give back in ways that truly make a difference. The Bream Bay Fishing Competition is a reflection of this mission, ensuring that everyone no matter their financial situation can participate, have fun and be part of something special.
